92549-002.0 Kalamazoo Downtown Streets, Phase 2, Technical Memorandum (PDF, 21MB)
The COK has studied a wide range of alternatives for converting streets in the east-west corridor centered on Kalamazoo Avenue and Michigan Avenue running through downtown Kalamazoo. CDM Smith and MKSK documented this work in their 2021 report Kalamazoo Downtown Streets, Phase 2, Technical Memorandum (available on City website).
For the Michigan Avenue conversion, CDM Smith identified three alternatives, of which the preferred is Alt 3. However, as part of its design work for the Kalamazoo Avenue two-way conversion, much further thought has been given to Michigan Avenue, and a modified section consisting of two eastbound lanes, one westbound lane, a center, left turn lane (including some raised islands), parking lanes, and bike lanes have been developed. This modified section will be the starting point for work done under this proposed project.
Since a federal RAISE Grant funds this project, the process for retaining a consultant will be done strictly per the Federal Highway Administration, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), and the City of Kalamazoo requirements. Consultant selection will be made per the MDOT QBS (Quality Based Selection).
