  • Summary It is the intent of the City of Kalamazoo to solicit bids from private vendors to provide and install monument foundations to the City owned Riverside Cemetery located at 1015 Gull Road and Mountain Home Cemetery located at 1402 West Main Street.

The City must be notified two full working days prior to beginning or resuming any and all phases of this contract. The contact persons from the City will be the Project Manager listed in this document, or other designee. Failure to provide the required notice may result in a 10% penalty.

  1. Monument foundations are to be installed at least three (3) times per year. With the first pouring before or during the first week of May.

  2. When orders are given to the contractor, foundations must be installed within ten (10) working days.

  3. Government Markers - 12”x4” upright government markers, 4” wide x 6” thick collar on all sides.

  4. Government Markers - 12”x24” flush bronze government markers, foundation 3” wide x 4” thick collar on all sides.

  5. Government Markers – 12”x24” flush granite government markers, foundation 4” thick collar is not required.

  6. Private markers and monuments -Upright markers 4” thick foundation with 4” thick and minimum of 4” wide collar on all sides. (Specific length and width dimensions to be supplied by office.)

    Exceptions will be required for larger and/or heavier markers.

  7. Private markers and monuments - Upright markers on ground with 15% grade or more, 12” thick foundation with 12” thick and minimum of 4” wide collar on all sides. (Specific length and width dimensions to be supplied by office.) This will be in addition to Concrete Placement Detail A or Detail B.

  8. Private markers and monuments - Flush bronze markers, 4” thick foundation with 2” wide and 4” thick collar on all sides.

  9. Private markers and monuments - Flush markers – 4” thick foundation. Collar is not required.

  10. Contractor is responsible for identifying and staking all foundations at the correct location using lot markers within the cemetery. If the contractor is unable to locate markers on the specific lot, they must use lot markers on the nearest lot and measure for accuracy. If, at any time, it is determined that the foundation has been improperly placed, the contractor will be responsible for removal and disposal of the foundation and reinstallation of a new foundation at the correct location.

  11. Contractor will be responsible to place flags at four corners of new foundations to ensure no damage is caused by other contractors working in the cemeteries (flags will be provided by the office).

  12. Dry pours will NOT be permitted.

  13. Use of standard form sizes will be established each year based on order history from the previous year.

  14. Upon request contractor may be asked to inspect old foundations to determine if it has failed and if a new one is needed.

  15. Contractor will be required to use the concrete foundation requirements, respective soil improvements and concrete placement details based on size and weight of the headstone.
